Project Overview

At TEREYN Architects, we were commissioned to lead the full internal and external refurbishment of an existing church premises in Leeds to create Mint One, a dynamic new conference facility and church meeting space designed to serve both local and city-wide communities.

The client’s ambition was to transform a dated and underused building into a multifunctional venue that could accommodate a wide range of activities, from worship and community gatherings to professional events and school groups. The proposal includes a large conference hall, adaptable meeting spaces, a commercial kitchen, a gym and games area for children, and dedicated office spaces on the upper floor designed to provide ongoing financial sustainability through rental income.

A central design challenge was to create two large, semi-flexible halls that could operate independently or open up into a single expansive events space when required. The reconfiguration of the internal layout was therefore critical in balancing acoustics, accessibility, and circulation to ensure flexibility and comfort for a wide variety of users.

Externally, the redesign modernises the existing building’s appearance, introducing new materials and architectural detailing to reflect its new identity as a welcoming civic asset and social space. The scheme improves the building’s street presence while ensuring it remains contextually appropriate within its surroundings.

The outcome is a thoughtful and generous proposal that places community engagement at its heart. Mint One will not only serve as a spiritual and social hub for local residents but also provide Leeds with a versatile, contemporary facility for events, conferences, and outreach programmes; strengthening connections between people, purpose, and place.
