The transformation of this previously dated bungalow in Waterbeach, Cambridge, showcases how clever architectural design can completely reinvent a home. Through strategic alterations, careful detailing, and a focus on natural light, the property has been reimagined into a calm, contemporary home that celebrates open-plan living and the connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.
Situated in a peaceful village just north of Cambridge, the property originally featured enclosed rooms and limited access to garden views. With its generous 360 degree plot and potential, it presented the ideal canvas for appreciating the garden spaces this property has to offer.
Our clients had recently relocated from central London, seeking tranquillity while maintaining proximity to Cambridge city and transport links into London. They envisioned a home designed around relaxation, walks within the village, and a strong relationship with nature. Their priorities were to create an open-plan kitchen and dining space overlooking the garden, a bright and functional living area, and a new master suite with en-suite that offered privacy and views across the garden.
Achieving the open-plan design within a single-storey bungalow required sensitive structural design to support the existing roof. Maintaining the project within budget and managing construction delays caused by weather and material shortages also tested leadtimes and project planning. Through regular communication and close collaboration with the client, we ensured a smooth design and build process from start to finish.
